I am easily distracted by shiny objects. This makes me a very dangerous person to let loose in a Whole Foods Market. It seems like every day there are new cleverly marketed products that claim they will add 10 years to your lifespan and be very delicious. I end up buying at least half of these, just to satisfy my curiosity. The latest item I just had to try was Himalania Goji Berries. After all, according to the packaging, and the official website they are the most famous berry in the Himalayas, so I really ought to get to know them.
It says right on the package that the monks of the Himalayas just eat them straight, so I thought that's how I'd start. I wasn't terribly impressed, they were very dry, with a little bit of berry flavor, but not not much. Trying to stay traditional, I read further down the package and found that the monks also steep them in tea. I decided to try this, but being that it's the middle of summer, I made iced tea. It added a very mild berry flavor and a hint of sweetness to the iced tea, and was actually quite pleasant, but I can't say I'm sure I would have noticed the flavor if I wasn't looking for it.
So I guess what it comes down to is whether or not you believe the claim that the Goji Berry is the world's most nutrient rich fruit. If you just want a tasty snack, raisins are juicier and much cheaper! Since I've got a whole bag of them, maybe I'll try some of the other suggestions on the package, but don't hold your breath.
